Scottish Traditional Kilt Measuring Guide

Measuring yourself for one of our traditional Scottish kilts is much easier than you think. Just follow the guide below and you will be able to complete your purchase.

Waist:

  • Find the hip bone and, from midway between the hip bone and rib cage, take the measurement around the NATURAL waist over a shirt.
  • If you can't find the hip bone, take the waist measurement approximately two fingers above the navel

Hip:

  • Measure loosely around the largest part of the bottom.

Length:

  • Return to the point where the waist measurement was taken, ie mid-way between the hip bone and the rib cage
      • From that point, measure down to the middle of the knee
      • Add 2" rise required for a kilt to this measurement
  • If you couldn't find the hip bone, go back to where you took the waist measurement, ie approximately two fingers above the navel:
      • From that point, measure down to the middle of the knee
      • This measurement ALREADY includes the 2" rise so do not add anything
  • As a rough guide only, a 5'10" tall man of average build would normally wear a 24" long kilt

Height:

  • Taken in you stocking soles

Mesaurements can be taken in inches or in centimetres.
